Snapchat Marketing Techniques

Everyone is talking about it- the new rage and using the platform Snapchat to market their business. In fact, I’ve recently seen quite a few posts and people offering training on how to use this new platform. Snapchat isn’t new, their initial release was in 2011, but it seems that now people are starting to see an opportunity to use it for marketing, and it’s not just people in network marketing either. Big companies like Amazon, Disney, Netflix, Target, Victoria Secret, and many others are also on Snapchat.ย  According to Wiki, Snapchat is getting around 7 BILLION daily views! That’s a crazy amount of snaps going on!

Snapchat Marketing

If you’re unsure of what Snapchat is-let me briefly explain. It’s a mobile app used to send photos and videos to your friends that will disappear forever once a person has seen it. The maximum that a photo or a video is allowed is only 10 seconds. There is also “Stories” in your homepage, which is kind of like a Facebook Newsfeed. There you can put as many photos or videos as you like (again max 10 seconds for each) but it will be available for people to see for 24 hours after you put it there. And again, once that 24 hours is gone, so are your photos/videos. So you’re probably wondering why or even how this particular app could help you market your business.

What's So Different About Snapchat Anyway?

First you don’t have to worry about getting any type of engagement on your photos or videos. There is NO liking, commenting or sharing anything! Which is great, because you don’t have to worry about things like “Edgerank” to determine if your stuff is going to be shown to your friends.

Second your friends are not distracted when looking at what you post. Think about when you’re on Facebook and you see a post you like and maybe want to read it later. What’s going on there in your Newsfeed? You have 100’s of other things there-videos, posts, pictures, statues, offer on trainings, ads and so on. You are distracted by tons of other things. But with Snapchat, if someone wants to see what you’ve posted, they actually have to click on it before they can see it! Which means, if they click on it, they really want to see what you’re up too!

Third, your “Stories” are only good for 24 hours. Once you have posted something people can only see it for that length of time.

Fourth and lastly- Snapchat gives you a unique opportunity to communicate with your friends in a more personal way, which helps build rapport and the relationship better. They get to see the real you in that moment-what you are really doing.

The only downside to Snapchat, (I know, everything has disadvantages with the advantages!) is it can be hard to build a “list” with this app because you can’t just go around searching and adding people like you would do with Facebook or Twitter. Therefore you’d have to use your other social media sites to drive people to your Snapchat profile.

How To Use Snapchat For Your Business

Okay, so now that I’ve covered what this app is, and how it’s different to other social media sites that you’re probably currently using, let’s dive into the nitty gritty of HOW you can actually start leveraging this platform!

First off, you can actually show your friends the behind the scenes! You can show them how you use your product or service in real time, giving them a glimpse of what your product does and how it enhances your life.

Start giving quick-and I mean quick- tips and advice that relates to your product, service or opportunity.ย  Don’t ramble on for 5 minutes like you do on a YouTube video (that would be a crazy amount of snaps!!) just get to the point…

If you haven’t launched a new product yet, give your followers a preview or a review, if you’ve used it, that they can only see on Snapchat. Don’t go posting it on your other social media sites… Make your followers on this app feel more connected to you by sharing some things ONLY on this particular platform. That way you will build trust quickly.

Offer promotion codes, discounts, or giveaways if you have your own product that you can do this for. Even if you don’t have your own product, if your company runs a promotion, offer it only to your friends on Snapchat, and if you need more followers on there, like I said, use the other social media sites to build your following.

If you do webinars, create a quick “story” to encourage your followers to attend your training or webinar.

Going to a company event? Well next time you do-Snapchat it! Give your followers a view of your company’s events and what you guys actually do. Show them the people you hang around and how much fun and education you get at your events.

Just as you would on Facebook, Twitter or any other social media sites, always engage with your followers. If they personally send you an individual snap, then reply back!

Ready To Start Using Snapchat?

If you’re ready to utilize Snapchat for your business, I just want to give you some quick pointers:

  • Once you create your user name-you can’t change it! So be sure of what you want to use.
  • Brand yourself, use your name and not your company. Be consistent- whatever you use on your other social media sites, use for Snapchat as well.
  • If you want everyone to be able to see your “Stories” be sure to change that in the settings.
  • You can send snaps to 100’s of people at once, but don’t spam people! Unless you are having a personal conversation or snap, I should say, about your product/service or biz, then don’t blast people with it. Just like you wouldn’t spam message people on Facebook, it’s not cool on Snapchat either!
  • Most people use their phone vertically, therefore keep your pictures and videos that way, it’s easier for your followers to look at your content.
  • Be you, be real. You don’t have to only snap about business, you can share other interesting things in your life too!
  • Be consistent, just like you do for your other places of “work” Try and snap often, especially if you’re doing something fun (even if it’s just a night out bowling!)… The more interesting your snaps are, the more people will keep clicking on your name to watch your stuff and keep coming back for more!
  • You can’t just search and follow people, but if you want to follow some top Snapchat people or brands you can click here to find their code to add them. The only way to find people is if you have their code or their specific username. P.S.-if you want to connect with me my Snapchat user name is “mrs.yovcheva” ๐Ÿ˜‰

While in the past Snapchat may have been used only by teens-it is now becoming a big platform for everyone to use. It’s now a place where you can impact your followers by showing them your point of view with a real time marketing strategy.

Love this! I’ve used to send snaps to my sisters with silly faces and just goof off… but lately I’ve been realizing that I can invite my readers to join me for a preview into “a day in the life” and it’s been really fun! I love the idea of followers getting a behind the scenes look. I hope to continue this much more in the future! Thanks for a great article with lots of good info to get me started.

Yes I was doing the same with my friend… but since learning how it can be leverage for the business side, I’ll also be using it for a “behind the scenes” look. Thanks you for your comment Leah, and hope you have a great day!!
